Nileshwar circle was formed on 02.05.1987 as per G.O. (M.S)17/87/Home, dated 02.03.1987 started to function in building No.KNP–IX A of Nileshwar Panchayath adjacent to the present Police Station building. Later, the office was shifted to the separate new building on 13.03.2006 inaugurated by Sri.M.N.Krishna Moorthy, IPS,the then Inspector General of Police. The circle area comprising of 265.88 Sq.KM, having a population of 223140 as per census 2011. Nileshwar is the cultural center of Kasargod District for centuries; it was the seat of Nileshwaram Rajas who were great patrons of Arts and Culture. In and around Nileshwar there are several Kavus having plenty of specious plants and believed to the abode of Gods by ancestors. The Circle consists of three Police stations ie Nileshwar, Chandera & Cheemeni. Among these, Cheemeni Police station was opened lastly, in the year 1989.It is the byproduct of the cold-blooded massacre that took place at Cheemeni town on 23.03.1987. This police station was formed by bifurcating Chandera & Nileshwar Police Stations. The village of Kayyur where the unfortunate incident that led to the death of PC 97 Subbaraya of British Police happened in connection with the freedom struggle is within the limits of Cheemeni Police Station. Chandera Police Station limit is highly sensitive on political as well as communal point of view. Beericheri, Padanna and Madakkara areas within the limits of Chandera Police Station is communally hyper sensitive. A large scale violence occurred during the year when a reception function was organized to honor the former Hon’ble Minister Sri. Cherkalam Aabdulla, at Padanne during 2001 and following the arrest of the CPI(M) Kannur District Secretary in connection with the Ariyil Shukkur murder case at Cheruvathur, Padnna, Madakkara, Trikaripur etc places. Valiyaparamba, the most scenic backwater stretch fed by four rivers and dotted with numerous little islands, Veeramala Hills a major tourist destination having the remnants of Dutch fort built in the 18th Century and the beautiful Harbor at Madakkara are within the limits of Chandera Police Station.
Nileshwar Police Station is generally a peaceful area. The coastal area becomes so tense and polarized with two communities. Even a skirmish will spoil in to a communal color and law and order situation. Kottappuram,a scenic place located at the banks of Thejaswini river and the wooden Bridge having 340 Meters long, which connects the islet of Achamthuruthi is the longest one of its kind, Kavil Bhavan yoga & nature cure centre, the famous Nileshwaram Palace now housed as folklore centre of Archeology Department are within the limits of Nileshwar Police Station.
At present, no Law and order issues are prevailing anywhere in the Circle limits. Both Chandera and Cheemeni police stations have extensive boarder with Kannur district which affected by any happening in the other district. There are as many as 108 SC/ST colonies in the Circle limits. Though the percentage of literacy is low in the colony areas when compared to that of other areas, the passion of the people for education and learning is growing in colony areas now a day.
Western side of the circle boarding with Arabian Sea having a coastal area of about 25 km. Coastal areas comprises of Muslims and Mukkuva communities earning their lively hood by fishing. The financial background of the Mukkuva is not satisfactory. During off-season, they have no alternative but to be starving. Most of the local Muslims are politically belongs to IUML and that of the Mukkuvas are BJP and Congress. Some miscreants from both sides used to poison the community which resulted in to clashes and damages to properties.
